On the Eighth Day of Christmas

…Whitehead Learning Group gave to me a new way to study! Unwrap today’s present to learn how to best prepare your student for his/her private school observation and interview.

School administrators and teachers want to know what makes your child wonderfully unique—all within an average of an hour. Read below for insight on how to best prepare your child for his or her interview and campus visit.

• During a Lower School observation, students will be spending time directly with a teacher, admissions council, and oftentimes, with other applicants. Your child will be asked to demonstrate age-appropriate academic and social-emotional skills. Lower school evaluations vary by school, but on average, last between 45-60 minutes.  Encourage your child to listen carefully and give their best effort!

• During a Middle or Upper School interview, you can expect your student to spend 30 minutes with a teacher or the Director of Enrollment. During this evaluation, teachers and administration are looking for collaborative critical thinkers who demonstrate resilience, self-awareness, and empathy. Encourage your student to be prepared to discuss his/her interests and passions—both in and out of the classroom as teachers are aiming to get to know your student. Questions matter! Prior to your student’s evaluation, spend some time on the school’s website and help your child devise a list of questions that he/she may have about the campus, extracurricular activities, athletics, or homework expectations.

 • Develop a rapport with the school’s admissions team. From coordinators and counselors to directors of enrollment, these experts are here to help—and they love to brag on their school! Develop a relationship with these guides—their insight will be indispensable as you make an informed decision.
