38 Minutes to Determine your Academic Future

A 2005 NACAC report discovered that the average college counselor spends just 38 minutes with each student altogether over the course of four years in high school. Getting to understand what makes a student unique, championing their gifts and strengths, unpacking a roadmap to admission, and sharing helpful college advice—all in the fleeting timespan of 38 minutes.  If students are only receiving 38 minutes of one-on-one time with their counselor, you can predict how much time parents get!

On the other hand, select an Atlanta private high school at random and ask their admissions team where their students go to college. Chances are they’ll be excited to loop you in. Annually, private high schools have excellent college placement records, sending their alums to top colleges and universities nationwide. What’s the secret?

By the Numbers

NACAC’s research revealed that public school counselors spend an average of 22 percent of their time on college counseling (the remaining block unpacks responsibilities such as high school academic counseling, teaching, and you guessed it—academic, standardized testing). Contrastingly, counselors at private schools spend nearly three times as much of their time devoted to college counseling—55 percent.
